Jiankou to Mutianyu (Wild Hike)
Get ready for an adventurous trek deep into the wild with this route. You’ll be hiking along the ridges, traversing the remnants of the Great Wall.
On this journey, expect to climb ladders, navigate piles of rocks, weave through branches growing on the wall, and descend steep slopes along the wall, experiencing the pinnacle of defensive structures from the era of cold weapons – it’s quite a challenge!
Upon reaching the ridge, you’ll be greeted with a panoramic view of the wall winding along steep peaks. It’s just you, the mountains, the ruins of the wall, and the history behind these ancient fortifications.

You can also opt for another easygoing route to tour the Great Wall.
The trails include dirt paths covered with fallen leaves, steps and narrow paths, well-paved sections, some areas with loose bricks and small stones, and parts that are either repaired or still in their original, somewhat precarious state. Overall, this variety often turns out to be a pleasant surprise for most customers.
We recommend wearing hiking boots for support and protection, guarding against kicking loose bricks or rocks. Non-slip soles are advisable in case of rain.
Customers as young as 5 and elderly couples in their 70s have hiked the Great Wall with us. Therefore, the key factors are your health condition and the weather.
Some sections with rugged and steep terrain can be challenging, but your personal guide is patient and provides complimentary hiking poles.
The prime spots for enjoying sunrise and sunset are at Jinshanling. If you want to catch the sunrise, it's recommended to stay overnight at the base of the wall.
The Mutianyu section is also a great choice for watching the sunset.
The Jinshanling Great Wall is half restored. You can witness the restored sections alongside the original wall ruins. This stretch also boasts some of the most beautiful natural scenery. Many professional Great Wall photos are taken here.
You can hike the Great Wall all year round, except during snowy and slippery conditions. There isn't a specific best time, as the finest weather/scenery also means more crowds.
Regardless of the weather, seasoned travel experts will make your experience more enjoyable. If you aim for the best weather conditions, May/June and September/October are the prime months for hiking.
